Soccer tactical analysis

This project is an analysis of Liverpool FC in the Champions League final of the 2004/2005 season. Using data visualization,  this project aims to provide more insight into the victory. Using various visualization techniques to showcase team statistics, individual player statistics along some performance metrics should tell us how Liverpool pulled off such a comeback.

Methodology

Python and libraries like Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib, Seaborn, were used to translate a complex dataset into actionable insights and communicate them effectively using a very thoughfully selected visualization techniques such as heat maps, pass plots, and radar charts.

01

Data Acquisition and Preparation

  • Using Statsbomb events data, gathered match statistics, player performance metrics, and positional data.

  • Cleansed and preprocessed the data to ensure consistency and accuracy, addressing any missing values or anomalies.

  • Utilized Python for data wrangling to automate data retrieval and preprocessing tasks.

02

Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA)

  • Conducted comprehensive exploratory data analysis to gain insights into the dataset's structure and characteristics.

  • Employed descriptive statistics, data visualization techniques, and interactive dashboards to uncover patterns, trends, and outliers.

03

Interpretation and Visualization

  • Visualized key findings using a variety of graphical representations, including heat maps, radar charts, and interactive plots.

  • Provided actionable insights and deciding factors based on the analysis, highlighting tactical strategies, player contributions, and areas for improvement.

  • Communicated findings effectively through clear and concise reports, presentations, and data-driven narratives, catering to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Results:

Detailed visualizations and analyses are presented, showcasing the differences between Liverpool's performance in the first and second halves. Key players such as Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso, Luis Garcia, and Jamie Carragher are examined in depth, highlighting their contributions to the team's turnaround.
